President and CEO
A 25-year technology veteran, Read is a seasoned leader with a deep body of experience in general management, strategic planning, sales, business development and marketing. His sense of timing and grasp of future trends enabled him to be a pioneer in each of the three great telecommunication waves – long distance, fiber optics/broadband, and cellular/wireless.
Read has an in-depth understanding of the full lifecycle of an emerging organization from raising capital to managing rapid, dynamic growth and the ultimate execution of an exit strategy. As Vice President and General Manager for XO Communications, Read successfully led the firm’s largest market through a period of unprecedented customer and personnel growth. At Verizon (AirTouch) he was the senior executive responsible for all direct distribution channels with over 300 sales & technical support employees. In a prior role at AirTouch, Read developed the innovative application suites for wireless transaction processing (POS), telemetry and the Mobile Office. As an Officer and Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Mutual Signal Corporation, Read was part of the entrepreneurial leadership team that designed, built, launched and operated one of the premier fiber-optic broadband networks of the day. He began his high-tech career with Sprint where he directed a nationwide cross-functional team that introduced the New Sprint service, which the Wall Street Journal correctly predicted would revolutionize the way long distance was sold.
Read was the spokesman for Sprint and Verizon and has logged over 100 TV, radio and print interviews. He is an accomplished speaker and writer and has been a keynote speaker and panelist at numerous industry and technology conferences. He was a charter member of the Board of Advisors for UCLA’s highly regarded Economic Business Forecast, and has been a Board Member of six Southern California community and academic institutions.
Read earned an M.B.A. from UCLA with a focus on finance and entrepreneurial marketing, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Miami University.
With a combined 15 years of experience in telecommunications, including engineering and operations management, sales and marketing, Alan Sparks is responsible for supporting the TeleSys staff and assisting in setting the strategic direction of the company. He also is the managing partner for Gemma Companies; a Scottsdale-based firm specialized in investor due diligence, financial analysis, and valuation. Gemma owns TeleSys Communications where Alan serves as Director.
Having begun his career in sales for Cablevision Systems in Long Island, New York, Alan later became the firm’s director of engineering before accepting a position as vice president of operations for Cox Communications. He brings expertise in fiber optic networks, point-to-point microwave, and satellite communication systems. As Gemma’s founding partner, he has performed consulting assignments for Sun Microsystems, Amazon, Deutsche Bank, Equant - U.S., and numerous smaller companies.
Alan graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Business Administration, and earned his M.B.A. in 1999 from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He has taken post-graduate courses on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. He currently serves on the Dean’s Council at Arizona State University’s College of Extended Education and is past president of the Board of Directors of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Southern Arizona.
Vice President, General Manager
Susan Barfoot started her career over 25 years ago with Mountain Bell Telephone Company, the predecessor to US WEST. At Mountain Bell, she worked in customer support and engineering positions, including account assignment, field support, trunking, technical writing, and inside the switching control center. While with US WEST, Susan was ranked as a 5ESS switch engineer and earned the rigorous TEC-44 certificate, enabling her to design highly complex customer applications.
Susan joined TeleSys Communications in 2003. She provides full customer support, working carefully to specify the technical attributes needed to optimize each circuit to unique customer applications. Responsible for all aspects of a customer circuit once an order has been received, Susan’s daily focus is on customer service and account accuracy.
TeleSys customers love Susan. She is always pleasant to deal with, even when everyone calls at the same time. Susan likes to scuba dive, and was recently honored as Volunteer of the Year at the Child Crisis Center.
